Boating can be profitable, relaxing, thrilling, and everything in between, but it’s important to have a boat with the right capabilities for you. Speed potential is an especially vital quality, and it’s important to know which boats have the speeds you need. We here at New Jersey Outboards want to help you find the boat of your dreams, so we’ve put together some tips on buying a boat with the right speed potential, below. For Thrill-Seekers

If your ideal day on the water involves break-neck speeds, spray and wind in your hair, and non-stop adrenaline, you’re certainly going to want to look at boats with more speed potential. However, speed itself isn’t the only factor. You’ll also want tight handling to keep you in control no matter how fast you’re cruising, so you’ll need to find a balance between agility and speed. Boats with maximum speeds of 20 mph or higher should be your first consideration.

For Watersports

While watersports certainly needs some speed to keep towlines taut, there is such a thing as too fast. If you’re looking for the perfect boat to tow watersports enthusiasts, your ideal range is somewhere between 10 and 35 mph. Different sports benefit from different speeds, as do different individuals.

Consider, for instance, how old and how experienced the people you’ll be towing are. If you’re towing someone in their prime who’s got a lot of watersports experience, you’re probably going to need something on the faster side. However, children, older participants, and beginners to the sport will need lower speeds to help them stay safe and in control. Try to avoid paying for speed that you won’t (or shouldn’t) use.

For Fishing

In some circumstances, high speeds can actually present issues that interfere with your plans. Experienced anglers know it’s best to avoid disturbing the water more than is necessary and to avoid overly-loud sounds, and a high-speed boat with its powerful engine fails on both counts. For fishing trips, the maximum speed you’ll want to avoid scaring the fish is about 15 mph. Buying a lower-speed model can save you significant money.

Considerations

It’s important to keep in mind that no matter which of these boating styles suits you best, fuel consumption is always a factor. The faster a boat goes, the harder its engine works, the more fuel you use in the same amount of time. Simply put, faster boats are less fuel-efficient, and that can cost you.

Also remember that certain waterways and certain areas of those waterways will have speed limits for the safety and convenience of all boaters.
